Jeremy Corbyn has come under intense fire after apparently calling Theresa May a “stupid woman” during the last Prime Minister’s Questions of the year. Mr Corbyn has denied such language and has instead insisted that he merely said “stupid people”, however, a lip reader has called doubt on what Corbyn says and is confident the words “stupid women” were used.
Evelyn Glennie, a famous percussionist who is deaf and can read lips, appeared on the Jeremy Vine Show and she is “very certain” Mr Corbyn said the words “stupid woman”. Jeremy Corbyn can certainly be seen mouthing the words“stupid woman” at Theresa May during an extremely heated debate at Prime Minister’s Questions today, he is outright denying it. The insult came after the Prime Minister said: “Look behind you. They’re not impressed and neither’s the country.” In reference to his weak leadership and failed motion to topple May’s government.
Mrs May responded to the remark: “Can I say to my right honourable friend that I think everybody in this House particular in this 100th year of women getting the vote, should be aiming to encourage women to come into this chamber and stand in this chamber, and should therefore use appropriate language in this chamber when referring to female members.” Vince Cable, the leader of the Liberal Democrats has called for Corbyn to apologise and to “get out of the 1980’s”.
A spokesman for Mr Corbyn said: “He did not call her a stupid woman and so I don’t think there’s any basis for an apology. “As I understand it, he said ‘stupid people’.” The spokesman said Mr Corbyn was referring generally to MPs who were not taking the issues being debated seriously. There are some calls for the leader of the Labour Party to resign: “Jeremy Corbyn should resign immediately, his use of words just shows why we need more women in politics.”
